About Scrutable

A product studio organized around answerability.

Scrutable designs and builds consequential software that can explain itself. The work combines product thinking, design, engineering, and institutional clarity.

Our belief

Capability without legibility is not enough.

As software takes on more judgment and operational responsibility, the people affected by it need more than a polished result. They need a way to see its basis, locate its owner, and challenge it when necessary.

Scrutable exists to make that standard practical: not as a slogan or compliance artifact, but as a quality of the working product.

Working principles

How we approach the work.

01

Show the basis

Important claims should remain connected to the evidence that supports them.

02

Name the owner

Automation should clarify responsibility, not make responsibility disappear.

03

Retain change

Correction should improve the present without pretending the past never happened.

04

Leave a route back

People need a visible way to question, correct, or revisit consequential results.

Public proof

The work carries its standing with it.

Scrutable’s public work is projected from an approval-gated catalog. Published projects identify their purpose, current status, audience, proof, and approval rather than asking the presentation to stand in for evidence.

Current operator

Built and led by Brandon Gottshall.

Brandon builds tools that turn messy workflows into explicit systems: learning products, document pipelines, developer utilities, and web software. Scrutable is the studio form of that work, focused on products whose decisions need to remain understandable.
